“Narcissistic sociopath” and “psychopath” — What is the difference?

By: Elizabeth Wieck (A Narcissistic Abuse Survivor)

The terms “narcissistic sociopath” and “psychopath” are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to distinct personality disorders with different characteristics and behaviors. Understanding the differences between these two types of individuals is essential for identifying potential danger and protecting oneself from their destructive tendencies.

Narcissistic Sociopaths:

Narcissistic sociopaths are characterized by a grandiose sense of self-importance, a lack of empathy, and a tendency to manipulate and exploit others for personal gain. They are often charming and charismatic, able to charm their way into the trust and admiration of those around them.

Narcissistic sociopaths have a sense of entitlement and believe that they are entitled to special treatment and privileges. They often display a lack of concern for the feelings and needs of others and may engage in manipulative behavior to get what they want.

Defining characteristic of a narcissistic sociopath is their tendency to engage in gaslighting.

One of the defining characteristics of a narcissistic sociopath is their tendency to engage in gaslighting, which involves undermining a victim’s confidence in their own perceptions and reality. They may twist the truth, deny facts, or simply refuse to acknowledge the feelings and needs of others. This can leave victims feeling confused, helpless, and trapped.

Psychopaths:

Psychopaths are characterized by a lack of empathy and remorse, a tendency towards impulsive behavior, and a disregard for social norms and rules. They often exhibit a lack of guilt or shame and may engage in criminal or violent behavior without any sense of remorse.

Both narcissistic sociopaths and psychopaths can be highly intelligent and have a superficial charm that they use to manipulate others. They are skilled at reading people and may use this ability to identify weaknesses and vulnerabilities that they can exploit. There are low-functioning and high-functioning types. Intelligence varies. Some can be lower-IQ, while others are documented geniuses.

Psychopaths tend to be highly impulsive and may engage in risk-taking behaviors without considering the consequences. They may also be prone to violence and aggression, particularly when they feel threatened or challenged.

Traits can and do often overlap. Narcissistic sociopaths and psychopaths share some similarities.

The Key Differences:

While narcissistic sociopaths and psychopaths share some similarities, there are key differences between these two types of individuals. Narcissistic sociopaths tend to be more focused on themselves and their own needs, while psychopaths are more focused on manipulating and exploiting others for their own gain. A similar, but important difference.

Narcissistic sociopaths may engage in gaslighting and other manipulative behaviors, but they are less likely to engage in violent or criminal behavior, though they may still. Psychopaths, on the other hand, are more likely to engage in violent or criminal behavior and may display a lack of remorse or empathy for their actions.

Another key difference is in their approach to relationships. Narcissistic sociopaths may manipulate and exploit others for their own gain, but they may also form close relationships with individuals who they see as useful or beneficial.

Psychopaths, on the other hand, tend to view relationships as a means to an end and may discard individuals once they are no longer useful.

Narcissistic sociopaths and psychopaths — identify potential danger and protect oneself!

Understanding the differences between narcissistic sociopaths and psychopaths is essential for identifying potential danger and protecting oneself from their destructive tendencies. While both types of individuals can be manipulative and exploitative, they exhibit distinct characteristics and behaviors that set them apart from one another.

It is important to be aware of these differences and take action to protect oneself from their harmful influence.
