Orwell’s Warning Goes Unheeded: 10 Ways We’re Failing as a Society
Despite Orwell’s warning in “1984,” we’re still failing to recognize the warning signs of totalitarianism. I share 10 ways we’re ignoring his message, from surveillance to historical revisionism. It’s time to take action and prevent the society Orwell warned us about.

As a society, we often look to the past to learn from our mistakes and improve our future. George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984” serves as a warning of what could happen when a government has too much power and control.
However, in damned spite of its continued relevance, we seem to be ignoring Orwell’s message.
I give you — most depressingly — 10 ways we’re failing to heed his warning:
- Acceptance of Surveillance: With the rise of social media and technology, we’ve become accustomed to being watched and monitored. We willingly give away our personal information without a second thought.
- Lack of Privacy: Our personal data is constantly being tracked and shared, leading to a lack of privacy and individuality.
- Propaganda: The media is filled with biased reporting and propaganda, leading to a lack of trust and understanding of important issues.
- Doublethink: We often hold two conflicting beliefs at the same time, without realizing the contradiction.
- Groupthink: We follow the crowd, rather than thinking for ourselves and challenging the status quo.
- Censorship: The suppression of free speech and ideas has become commonplace, limiting our ability to think critically and creatively.
- Newspeak: The distortion of language and meaning has become normalized, leading to a lack of clarity and understanding.
- Manipulation: Political leaders use fear and manipulation to control and influence the masses.
- Historical Revisionism: The rewriting of history has become common, leading to a lack of understanding and perspective.
- Ignorance: We have become complacent and ignorant of the dangers of totalitarianism and the erosion of our freedoms.
As Orwell himself said, “The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” We must recognize these warning signs and actively work to prevent the society Orwell warned us about.
Our Dystopian Future: Tomorrow is Now
George Orwell’s “1984” is a classic dystopian novel that has been widely read and analyzed since its publication in 1949. The novel is set in a totalitarian society ruled by the Party, led by the enigmatic Big Brother. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a low-ranking member of the Party who begins to rebel against the oppressive regime. The novel explores themes of government surveillance, censorship, and the power of language to manipulate and control society.
The story is set in Airstrip One, a province of the superstate Oceania, which is constantly at war with the two other superstates, Eurasia and Eastasia. The Party maintains control over the population through the use of telescreens, which monitor citizens’ every move and expression. The Party’s slogan, “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength,” is plastered everywhere and serves as a reminder of the government’s control over the people.
Winston works at the Ministry of Truth, where he is responsible for rewriting history to fit the Party’s narrative. He secretly rebels against the Party, starting a journal and beginning a relationship with a fellow Party member named Julia. Winston and Julia believe that they can escape the Party’s watchful eye, but they are eventually caught by the Thought Police.
Winston is tortured and brainwashed until he is a loyal Party member. The novel ends with Winston accepting the Party’s doctrine and loving Big Brother.
The novel is a cautionary tale about the dangers of totalitarianism and the power of propaganda to control society. It warns against the manipulation of language and the dangers of a government that has complete control over its citizens. Orwell’s predictions about government surveillance, censorship, and the use of propaganda have become eerily prescient in today’s world.
“1984” is a timeless classic of the future that continues to resonate with readers today. It serves as a warning about the dangers of a government that has complete control over its citizens and the importance of freedom and individuality.
