Narcissistic abuse is a form of emotional and psychological abuse that can have long-lasting effects on the victim. While many people are familiar with some of the more obvious signs of narcissistic abuse, such as verbal and physical aggression, there are many other symptoms that can go unnoticed. I will point out and explain 10 surprising symptoms of narcissistic abuse that victims may experience.
- Emotional Numbness: Victims of narcissistic abuse may become emotionally numb as a way to cope with the constant invalidation and gaslighting they experience. They may struggle to connect with their emotions and feel a sense of emptiness or detachment.
- Anxiety and Depression: Narcissistic abuse can cause victims to experience anxiety and depression as a result of the constant stress and trauma. They may struggle with feelings of hopelessness and have difficulty finding joy in life.
- Chronic Fatigue: The stress of narcissistic abuse can lead to physical exhaustion, as victims are constantly on high alert and in a state of fight or flight.
- Self-Doubt: Narcissistic abusers often manipulate their victims into believing that they are the problem, leading to feelings of self-doubt and insecurity.
- Hypervigilance: Victims of narcissistic abuse may become hypervigilant as a way to protect themselves from further harm. They may struggle to relax or feel safe, and may constantly be on the lookout for signs of danger.
- Emotional Flashbacks: Emotional flashbacks are a symptom of complex trauma that can result from narcissistic abuse. Victims may experience intense emotional states that are triggered by past traumatic experiences.
- Chronic Pain: The stress and trauma of narcissistic abuse can manifest physically, leading to chronic pain and other physical symptoms.
- Dissociation: Victims of narcissistic abuse may dissociate as a way to cope with the trauma. They may feel disconnected from their thoughts, emotions, and surroundings.
- Substance Abuse: Narcissistic abuse can lead to substance abuse as victims try to cope with the pain and trauma. They may turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to numb their emotions or escape from reality.
